Positive Pressure Fire Tests of Door Assemblies - US test standard

At UL's in-house laboratory in Northbrook, Chicago, Illinois, we can test closures according to the American standard. Alternatively at the UL laboratory in Rosenheim, Germany. The test is very similar to the European one, in extreme synthesis, it differs in the application at the end of the test, over 20 minutes, of the hose stream test, which is a full power hydrant jet that follows a certain pattern (a path) for a certain time. The door must not leave open spaces from which it can be glimpsed after the hose stream and the lobs must be engaged at the end of the test.
CLASSIFICATIONS
The available classifications are: 20 minutes without hose stream 20 minutes with hose stream 30 minutes with hose stream 3/4 of an hour with hose stream 1 hour with hose stream 1 and 1/2 hour with hose stream 3 hours with hose stream 4 hours with hose stream
EXPOSED SIDE
Normally, in the case of symmetrical constructions, only the side that is pulled exposed (door that opens towards the oven) is tested. If the hose stream fails in a door that has withstood fire for more than 20 minutes, the only possible classification remains 20 minutes without hose stream. It is an extremely demanding test especially for wooden doors. We have the possibility to combine, in the same test if carried out at the laboratory in Rosenheim, also the test according to the European standard EN 1634-1. With the UL 10Bstandard no positive pressure is applied (it's a bit simpler). With the UL 10Cstandard positive pressure is applied. The CAN-S/104standard is like UL 10C, but only ports that exceed the Hose Stream are classified.
TESTS FOR CONSTRUCTION COMPONENTS
Inside a door that is ULtested, accessories such as hinges, some types of gaskets and dropdown sealscan also be tested and subsequently "listed". Door closers require an additional test (endurance according to UL228), while locks are normally tested inside a metallic hollow door listed for up to 3 hours, so they are hardly suitable for testing in conjunction with the door itself.
HOW TO MAKE VARIANTS OR REPLACE COMPONENTS?
Change hinges, locks, finishes, design. Sometimes this is possible without new tests: you have to present the case to UL engineeringand a Minor Evaluationor a Major Evaluationcould be established, which complements the UL File concerning the port. The difference lies in the cost which is greater whether Minor, Major or new test.

These requirements concern the inspection of air leaks through doors and other protective elements installed in openings where the air leakage must be checked.
THE TEST
UL 1784is a test that is very similar to the European test according to EN1634-3, where the heating is similar (400degrees fahrenheit is 204 degrees), but the temperature in the test chamber must be reached, instead of 30 minutes as indicated in the European test, in 15 minutes. Smoke-proof doors normally have the addition of an "S" in the definition (e.g. FD20S). This involves an additional test in addition to the UL10b/UL10cfire test.

This standard was the result of studies, verifications, installations and manufacturing criteria used by ULhas been evaluating panic devices since 1920, when the first list of panic devices was approved for publication. UL 305was developed in particular as a test method focusing on the evaluation of panic devices for use in emergency exits. Underwriters Laboratories(UL) published the first edition of the standard in 1955 which has been in continuous use through the sixth edition today. It is also relevant to note that UL 305has become a mandatory requirement referred to in the International Building Code (IBC)published by the International Code Council (ICC). The IBC document is important for any company interested in exporting as the rules are introduced in every state of the Union through various editions. Outside the United States, content from the IBC can be found in building regulations at various locations in the Middle East. THE CALCULATION
The calculation of the STC (Sound Transmission Class)index, according to the E413standard, is based on the values calculated for each one-third octave frequency band from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz. The experimental curve is evaluated and compared with the reference curve. Then the curve comparison method is applied up to the point where the sum of the unfavourable differences between the relative curve values are on the reference curve less than or equal to 32 dB and the maximum deficiency at any one frequency does not exceed 8 dB. The single number rating is given by the value of the reference contour shifted to 500 Hz.
TL ED OITC
The classification, according to the E1332standard, requires the measurement of transmission loss (TL - Transmission Loss) in the third octave band from 80 to 4000 Hzfor the determination of the OITC (Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class) index. The same header port for Rw and STC could give similar results, although sometimes American results are slightly more "optimistic" than European ones. By changing the band and method, the results may vary.
