The doors are placed on a test bench and the desired number of cycles are carried out. It is an accessory obligation for fire resistant doors in various markets, for example in Italy 500 functional test cycles and 5000 ageing cycles are required before the fire test according to Annex A of the Decree of the Ministry of the Interior 21.06.2004. In Germany 250,000 cycles are required, in Spain 200,000.
FIRE DOORS, PUT TO THE TEST
When subject to this type of test, fire doors cannot be serviced, adjusted or greased until the end of the test.

FAILURE OF THE TEST
Failure occurs if:
  • There is a failure of the material or of any component essential to the function of the sample (e.g. the handle drops...);
  • The sample is not functional to operational forces, to be compared with EN13115or EN12217;
  • The set number of cycles has been reached;
  • The sample cannot be opened or closed;
  • For self-closing doors, the self-closing or hold open mechanism does not work;
  • For fire and smoke resistant doors, the gaps must be checked according to point 5.3.2 of EN14600.
VERIFICATIONS
The forces and clearances must be verified at a series of intervals established during the test referring to the totality of the cycles to be carried out.
FAILURE OF THE TEST
Although withdrawn, EN14600(the "grandmother" of EN16034) to which EN1191refers, says that the gaps must remain within the tolerances given in EN1634-1and/or EN1634-3. Having taken into account the detected gaps and design gaps in EN1634-1, we believe that at that point the cyclic test should be carried out after the fire test keeping in mind the minimum and maximum gaps reported in the test report, beyond which the cyclic test will have failed, also bearing in mind where applicable the parameters related to 6 and 25 mm calibres.
DURATION OF THE TEST
We have seen that testing single leaf doors take about 40 days, double leaf doors take longer depending on the type and operation.
SPEED
The opening and closing speeds also depend on the weight of the door: it is, however, set in accordance with the standard.
WHAT IS THIS TESTFOR?
Understood the test methodology, this test serves to understand what durability a door can offer. It is clear that for a designer, choosing or prescribing a C0, C1 or C5 door will change a lot. The prescriber's intelligence will be to choose, for high passage positions, a door suitable to support many cycles, such as, for example, for a hospital passage door, a door classified C5, while storage room doors may not have this need.
