This method tests the ability of an element to absorb the sound energy emitted by a source. The evaluation index is expressed with the sound absorption coefficient according to EN ISO 11654: 1998 αw, which introduces classes as follows:

Class: B / αw – Values 0,80; 0,85 / Absorption class: highly absorbent

This standard will change the fire resistant market in the next few years as it allows manufacturers a greater extension of results but with better control of the various stages of production.

The product standards regarding fire and smoke doors, EN 16034:2014 Pedestrian doorsets, industrial, commercial, garage doors and openable windows – Product standard, performance characteristics – Fire resisting and / or smoke control characteristics, will take effect on Nov. 1, 2016.

It is confirmed the coexistence that is fixed in three years.

The EN 16034 publication features a footnote saying that currently it can only be used in combination with EN 14351-1 (external doors) or EN 13241-1 (industrial gates).

Measurement of the sound absorption in a reverberation room

This method tests the ability of an element to absorb the sound energy emitted by a source. The evaluation index is expressed with the sound absorption coefficient according to EN ISO 11654: 1998 αw, which introduces classes as follows:

Class: A / αw – Values 0,90; 0,95; 1,00 / Absorption class: high absorbent
Class: B / αw – Values 0,80; 0,85 / Absorption class: highly absorbent
Class: C / αw – Values 0,60; 0,65; 0,70; 0,75 / Absorption class: very absorbent

The test is performed in a echo chamber and issuing and turning off the source. This standard will change the fire resistant market in the next few years as it allows manufacturers a greater extension of results but with better control of the various stages of production.

The product standards regarding fire and smoke doors, EN 16034:2014 Pedestrian doorsets, industrial, commercial, garage doors and openable windows – Product standard, performance characteristics – Fire resisting and / or smoke control characteristics, will take effect on Nov. 1, 2016.

It is confirmed the coexistence that is fixed in three years.

The EN 16034 publication features a footnote saying that currently it can only be used in combination with EN 14351-1 (external doors) or EN 13241-1 (industrial gates).
